Why are the farmers upset?



Farmers across the country are protesting against the three farm reform bills passed by the parliament during its monsoon session. The three bills passed were The Farmers’ Produce Trade And Commerce (Promotion And Facilitation) Bill, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill.

What is farm bill 2020?

Three farm bills were introduced in parliament on September 14 to replace the ordinances issued during the lockdown. The farm reform bills have led to widespread protests across the country. 

What does these farm bills scout to?

Breaks the monopoly of the government-regulated mandis(markets) and allow farmers to sell directly to the private buyers.

Provides legal framework for farmers to enter into written contracts with companies and produce for them.

It allows agri-business to stock food articles and remove the governments ability to impose restrictions arbitrary.

A look at the data

During independence, about 70% of India's workforce was employed in the agricultural sector. Agriculture and allied activities accounted for around 54% of India's national income 

Over the years, agricultural distribution has declined sharply. Yet, the proportion of India's engaged agriculture has fallen to just 55%.

What is the fear?

Mandis bring the revenue for state governments and this diminish their relevance.

middlemen will be affected.

End of minimum support prices(MSPs) . The govt claims it to remain it as it was but the MSPs are not mentioned in the new bill.


Are the fears valid?

Now the farmers will have the liberty to choose to sell where they want to sell their crops but they may not  be able to negotiate with the private companies. There is hardly any any regulation outside the mandis. The end of MSPs diminishes the ray of hope of farmers which they enjoyed earlier. The farmers are currently protesting against the bill and demand the withdrawal of the bill passed by the parliament.

    The interest of the farmers are jeopardised, these legislation should be recalled. We are a democratic state but the government is acting like an autocrat.
