Are We Ready to Open Schools? Is It Safe?


With the country in the middle of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, the cases of
Covid-19 are accelerating once again in the country. With an increase in the daily number of cases, some states are planning to re-open the schools whereas some have already ordered to do so. The director of AIIMS warned that the second wave of Covid-19 has already begun in India. Now the question that arises is Are We Ready to Open the Schools?

The Union Ministry of Education under Unlock 5.0 passed the guidelines for re-opening of schools from October 15. While some states have already re-opened the schools from November 2, some are still figuring out on when to re-open them whereas few of them are waiting for the festive season to get over.

List of Opening Date of Schools:

Arunachal Pradesh: November 16(Classes 10 and 12)

Maharashtra: November 23(Classes 9 to 12)

Gujarat: November 23 

Haryana: November 16

Goa: November 21(Classes 10 and 12)

What Happened when schools reopened in various states and countries?

Andhra Pradesh: After the schools reopened in Andhra Pradesh, 879 teachers and 575 students has tested positive for Covid-19 till now, setting a cautionary tale for other states.

Uttarakhand: 80 teachers from 23 schools tested positive in Pauri Garhwal district after the schools were reopened for classes X and XII.

Haryana: After the schools reopened on November 2, three students of government school has tested positive for Covid-19 so far in Nirwana. The schools and colleges are set to reopen again from November 16.

Himachal Pradesh: 40 teachers tested positive for Covid-19 after the schools reopened in the state. 

Mizoram: 8 students were infected with Covid-19 after the reopening of schools. 

Around 97,000 Kids tested positive after schools reopened in US. 

Parent's Views on reopening of schools

With a surge in the cases of Covid-19 in the country about 71% of Parents feel that it isn't the right time to reopen schools in country and will not be sending their kids to school even if it reopens.

About 28 per cent parents are in favor of opening schools in the year 2020 whereas 34 per cent parents feels that the schools should not reopen before the academic year 2021.

Keeping in mind Covid-19 combined with smog in the month of November-December, the schools shouldn't reopen at this time of year as it might make the situation more dangerous and terrifying.
